AI is powered by humans, not the other way around.
AI tools like Chat GPT can be an amazing resource when it comes to your job search. From writing snappy opening statements and summaries to jazzy descriptions about what you do and have delivered, it’s important to keep the human element into your applications. After all you are one and so is the reader!
As more and more companies are turning to technology to streamline their hiring process, it’s important to remember the human element in your job application. While Chat GPT can be a great tool for crafting a polished and professional resume and cover letter, it’s important to remember that the people on the other end of the application are just that – people.
We are seeing some amazing advances with technology, and AI seems to be on everyone’s lips at them moment, and rightly so – it’s a hot topic of debate! It’s everywhere, and recruitment and hiring is no different. There are both good and bad advances though, and for me it’s important to keep the human element. We see that technology continues to advance, it’s becoming increasingly common for companies to rely on automated systems to screen job applicants. This can include everything from initial resume screenings to pre-recorded video interviews. While these systems can save time and resources for recruitment teams, they also have the potential to make the hiring process feel impersonal and robotic for candidates. I can see this being the case in industries with high volume roles – I’m not seeing it happen in the digital space and we don’t use AI tools to screen here at Big Wave Digital. Would we use it in the future? Maybe – I can imagine if you were recruiting in a sector that saw hundreds of job applications it could save time and money to use AI to do the initial screening.
We specialise in recruiting roles across digital, data and technology, allowing us to get a front row seat to all of the advances technology is making. We hear direct from the market in new ways of digital marketing, new technology across a range of industries from ecommerce to streaming media, to blockchain, AI and machine learning.
How do we keep the human element in our job search?
Personalisation is the name of the game! This means taking the time to research the company and the position you’re applying for, and tailoring your application materials accordingly. For example, instead of using a generic opening line in your cover letter, try to find something specific about the company or the role that you can mention. This could be a recent project they completed, a company value that resonates with you, or even a quote from the hiring manager that you came across in your research. By showing that you’ve done your homework and that you’re genuinely interested in the company and the role, you’ll be more likely to capture the hiring manager’s attention and have them screaming “I need this person in our business!”. This works across all areas of digital, data and tech recruitment – show what you can do and achieve!
“Smile for the camera”
There is a lot of debate around adding photos to CV’s. Personally, I’m a big fan. A good photo that shows the real you (please nothing overly filtered!) can take your CV from a boring, just like the rest document, into the real world. Same can be said for video applications. Whilst I don’t think video introductions that are compulsory are inclusive enough for all applications, having a visual representation of yourself can help the hiring manager put a face to a name, and can also give them a sense of your personality and how you might fit in with their team. In addition, a video introduction can be a great way to showcase your communication skills and give the hiring manager a sense of what it would be like to work with you. My area of expertise is digital recruitment and 90% of the CVs I see have a photo. My colleagues who specialise in tech recruitment see less exciting CV’s that for sure but I have been working with a number of candidates in the tech space to help them modernise their CV’s – afterall, people hiring in the technology sector are still humans too!
Keep the communication channels open too.
Following up with people and openly communicating during the hiring process is a great way to showcase your communication skills and your proactive nature. I’d recommend, whether you are working with a recruiter or directly with a company, that you follow up – keep your application front of mind and continue to express your interest in the role. I also can’t stress enough the importance of preparing questions (and even the answers you’ll get) during interviews. Make sure you prepare a number of thoughtful questions and actively engage with the interviewer. This can help to build a relationship with the hiring manager and demonstrate your interest in the position. Plus, it shows you can think on your feet, so be ready to answer the answer to your question!
An extra tip when it comes to question time…
And please, stop using this time to ask questions like what is the salary range (unless it hasn’t been communicated or advertised) and if the company is interviewing other people. It’s irrelevant and a waste of time you have in front of key decision makers. Ask questions like what are the key challenges this role could solve in the next 6 months, or is there anything you (as the candidate) missed or didn’t cover? Questions around career development are also good (what is the career path for this role? Does the business offer career development courses and programs?). If in doubt, I like to ask why the person sitting in front of me joined the business and what do they like about it.
I get it, sometimes you’re nervous in an interview and the Q&A part freaks you out! That’s why you need to write down your questions, and even take the time to predict what the answers could be. The great thing about virtual interviews is that you can use visual cues (I love a post it note) to help tackle nerves getting the better of you. Even in a face to face interview, take in notes with you, and don’t be afraid to refer to them!
You do you, boo
Be genuine and authentic. Instead of trying to fit into a mould of what you think the company is looking for, be yourself. Share your passions, interests, and values, and how they align with the company’s mission and vision. Show how your background, experience, and skills make you a valuable addition to the team. This will help you stand out from other applicants, and it will make it easier for the hiring manager to envision you as a member of their team.
Once, twice, three times a lady…
Chat GPT can be a great tool to help you with your job application, but make sure to proofread and edit your application thoroughly. I’m talking 3 times! This will help you to ensure that your application is free of errors and that it is written in a clear and concise manner, but also sounds like you! Also, you can use Chat GPT as a tool to generate ideas and brainstorm potential responses to common interview questions. This can help you to be prepared and confident in the interview process.
It takes two to tango.
Finally, it’s important to remember that the hiring process is a two-way street. As you’re trying to impress the hiring manager and showcase your qualifications, they’re also trying to determine if you’re the right fit for the company and the role. By adding a human element to your job application and actively engaging with the recruitment team or hiring manager throughout the process, you’ll be more front of mind and a more “human” application (rather than just a CV).
