I’ve always been a big fan of M.C. Escher’s Mind-Bending Works, the mathematician turned artist or vice-versa. The reason I mention this is that I see Tech recruitment in a similar light.
Not the shifting of reality or perception but more about the identification of relevant patterns and their associated meanings, i.e. why one Tech candidate stands out above another.
In one-way, Tech recruitment is quite binary, in that the grey areas that would be more critical to perhaps say a Sales Candidate are relevant but in a different way.
eg a Python Developer needs experience in Python and potentially a particular framework like Flask or Django, however this can still be interpreted if other ‘skills’ pr patterns are present.
Tech recruitment is about identifying skills, Tech skills, that may or may not be obvious or even listed on someone’s resume or LinkedIn profile. The number of Talented Senior Developers that have actually removed any mention of their key tech skills is both intriguing and amazing. They do this so that they don’t get spammed daily as a function of having those ‘in-demand’ tech skills.
Of course, its also about cultural fit, communication, EQ and IQ but the great thing about being good at Tech recruitment is that its about spotting a pattern and thinking or saying to yourself, I’ve seen this before and even though this candidate may not even be articulating this skill-set , through seeing this similar pattern before I know that I’ve spotted GOLD .
