Rural Content and Community Lead

Social, email and video. You know what makes a rural audience stop scrolling. You also know your way around a timeline.

Sydney, North Shore  •  Full time  •  $80k to $90k  •  Some time out where the mobile signal gets thoughtful

“A cloud of dust on the long white road”
Henry Lawson, The Teams, 1889

That is roughly the view this content will be coming from. Our client needs someone who can turn it into a feed people actually look forward to. This is a social and email role first, with real video craft behind it, and in that order.

First, who we are

Big Wave Digital has spent close to thirty years placing technology, digital and creative talent across Australia and beyond. We are deliberately small and deliberately fussy. We take on a handful of searches at a time, which means when we tell you a client is worth your attention, we have already done the work to make sure that is true.

This client is one of the good ones. An established Australian technology business, growing quickly, building tools for the people who run country. Producers, graziers, rural operators. The ones making a hundred consequential decisions before most of Sydney has located its first coffee. The work sits somewhere between the paddock and the platform, and they need someone who can carry that story into people’s inboxes and feeds without flattening it.

The job in one line

Own the social channels and the email programme, and keep them full of content that rings true.

What you will actually own

Social media

The channels are yours. Planning them, filling them, growing them. Building a calendar that survives contact with reality, publishing with a consistent rhythm, and reading the numbers afterwards so the next month is sharper than the last. You will know the difference between content that performs and content that merely posts, and you will have opinions about why.

Email marketing

The other half of the role. Customer communications, campaigns and the sequences that carry people through their first year and well past it. Writing that is warm and clear, segmented sensibly, and measured properly. Email is where a lot of the commercial value of this job quietly lives, and the right person treats it with as much care as the hero video.

Between the two, the work has a job to do at every stage. Helping people who have never heard of the business understand why it might matter to them. Helping existing customers get more from what they already own. Showing them what else is worth having. Giving them good reasons to stay. Instinct starts the conversation. The numbers finish it.

The video side

This is the second string, but it matters. A good deal of raw footage and photography already comes in from the client’s business development managers, who are out on properties across the country every week and never short of a camera. Your job is to take what they capture and shape it.

Ideally you bring:

  • Real video editing capability, formal qualifications welcome
  • Fluency in Adobe After Effects and CapCut, or close equivalents
  • Basic graphic and motion design skills to lift a piece where footage alone will not carry it
  • The judgement to find the ninety seconds that matter in a long, wind-buffeted interview and cut the rest

You will not be the only camera on this. You will be the person who turns everyone else’s cards into something worth watching, then versions it properly for each channel rather than exporting once and scattering it in hope.

Who this suits

Someone who genuinely likes agricultural people and does not need to perform it. You might have grown up on the land, worked a season, married into it, or spent years covering the sector. What matters is that you understand rural life well enough to know when a story rings true and when it sounds like an advertising agency doing an impression of the bush. Everyone out there can tell the difference immediately, and they are far too polite to mention it.

The craft you will need:

  • Strong social media management, the skill the client cares about most
  • Email marketing and CRM experience, campaigns and journeys, not just broadcasts
  • Video editing with the tools above, plus basic motion and graphic design
  • Writing that is clear, warm and free of marketing sludge
  • An instinct for what a particular audience will actually watch and open, which is rarely what a marketing plan assumes

Useful but not essential: agritech or rural industry experience, content for technology products, paid media support, photography of your own.

Who you will work with

You will report to the Creative Director and work day to day alongside a digital designer. Beyond the office, your closest collaborators are the business development managers spread across the country. They are your eyes and your camera crew in places you cannot always get to, and a good working rhythm with them is half the job. The person who thrives here builds those relationships early and makes the BDMs glad to send footage in, because they can see what becomes of it.

What you are walking into

A high growth business that moves quickly and expects people to own outcomes rather than tasks. The culture is humble, straight talking and pragmatic. Problems are raised early. Meetings finish with decisions. Specialists are trusted to own their craft and are not managed by committee.

The environment shifts. Processes are still being built and you will help build them. If you need a fully formed system on day one, this will frustrate you. If you enjoy making the system, this is a rare opportunity.

“And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended”
Banjo Paterson, Clancy of the Overflow, 1889

The ambition here is not modest. The goal is to become one of the most respected marketing teams in Australian agricultural technology. Social and content sit at the centre of that, which means this role has considerably more room in it than a posting schedule suggests.

Two things worth being straight about

The country does not run on schedule. Seasons, weather and mustering decide when a story is available, not your content calendar. Plans will move. The people who do well here treat that as part of the craft rather than an inconvenience to be escalated.

Taste matters more than gear. A beautifully judged ninety seconds cut from BDM phone footage beats a polished corporate video nobody finishes, every time, and it is not close.

How to apply

Send the work first. A short note on why rural Australia interests you, a channel or campaign you are proud of, and two or three edits you would happily put your name to. CV afterwards. Applications and confidential enquiries to Big Wave Digital.
