2022 felt like no other year in recruitment. There were talent shortages everywhere, companies were hiring like crazy, with sign on bonuses and other initiatives in a bid to win the so called “war on talent”. Horrible way to describe it if you ask me!
But years like 2022 can teach us a lot, and as people on the front line of digital, data and tech recruitment, we have some stories to tell! We saw the good, the bad and everything in between. What stood out for me was the best in class for hiring, companies and hiring managers who could see that what the demand and short supply of people was actually changing recruitment and the way companies hire for the better.

Competition for people in high demand areas (and we can include digital and data, and definitely TECH into this) has always been strong – if you want to hire the best of the best (hello Top Gun reference), you have to be savvy, social and smart. Let me elaborate further.
Be Savvy
As the old saying goes “Time kills all deals” and this is no truer than in recruitment. And fairly so. People at the top of their game (or people just in general actually) shouldn’t have to wait 3 weeks to have feedback from an interview. Everything we do today is immediate – order groceries online and wait 3 weeks for deliver – are you kidding! Be savvy in your timing – if an interview has gone well continue to build momentum, go back to that person within 24 hours and if you are doing further interview rounds, get them in the diary immediately. Same goes for people not progressing – ghosting is for dating, not hiring. Give people constructive feedback allowing them, and you, to move on.
Be Social (as in the social media sense)
Just as you look up a candidate on socials, so are they on you, and your business. My advice? Get posting! LinkedIn is a great place to start, from a snap shot of a day in the life to celebrating wins of the team. Get the broader business involved as well. TikTok for business will take off in 2023 and if most of your audience/potential team hangs out there, it might make sense for you to hang out there too! Be engaging and authentic, look at what your peers and competitors are doing, and help people fall in love with your business even before they meet you.
Be Smart (and work with a recruiter)
Of course we’re biased, but our intel and feedback from candidates is that the whole process of applying, interviewing and securing a new role is far better when working with recruiters. If you as a hiring manager are advertising, shortlisting, screening, interviewing, negotiating, reference checking and onboarding, you’ll have little time to do what you are actually good at. Whilst time is not the only thing you’ll expect from a recruiter, it may be a huge part of it. One point of contact, one person to liaise with.
