Recruitment — A Quick Guide

About Recruitment
I’ve been in recruitment (Digital & Technical) for now close to 24 years, and its amazing how many times I’ve heard people tell me how easy recruitment is.
My mantra is that recruitment is easy until it’s not easy, I’ve quantified around 100 variables that can pop up at any stage as a genuine ‘Game Stopper’ from salary to , flexibility to job title etc
Recruitment has 2 sides, candidate and client, and they have to work on both sides, otherwise it simply won’t happen.
Recruitment in 2022 is probably the toughest, yet most rewarding periods of employment I’ve ever worked in, perhaps the biggest difference today is that it’s all about what the candidate wants as opposed to being a tick box session for employers. ie What’s in it for me (the candidate).
In this market I see 5 key points as non-negotiable in relation to hiring top talent in Digital Marketing and Technical recruitment. If you want to win and keep winning do all of these.
1. Flexibility – look at what Atlassian are doing currently 100% remote
2. Salary needs to be competitive, think about this, senior Devs are getting between $180k to $220k + super + stock options or crypto, you get what you pay for.
3. Engagement and meaning – unless candidates understand why they are working for your business, the VISION and how this changes the world for the better, then good luck in securing top talent.
4. How you interview, your style matters, as I said earlier its ALL about the candidates in this market, ie what’s in it for them.
5. Speed to interview and speed to offer – all matters
Yep recruitment is easy until it’s not …
What’s your recruitment strategy looking like for the next 6 to 12 months? How can we help on that ?

A practical view on Recruitment
If you are thinking about recruitment right now, a few things are worth keeping front of mind. First, context matters more than checklists. Second, the Australian technology market moves quickly, so the right approach to recruitment this year may look different to last year. Third, a specialist recruitment partner who lives in this space can save you a great deal of time and risk. That is exactly where recruitment becomes a competitive advantage rather than a box to tick.
Big Wave Digital works with employers and candidates across Sydney and wider Australia on recruitment every week. If this is relevant to your team or your career, we are always happy to share a practical, current perspective on recruitment.
