Platform Engineer | HTML5 Gaming & Front-End Systems | Chatswood, Sydney | $120k–$160k + Super
Build the shared engineering foundations behind modern mobile gaming.
Big Wave Digital is partnering with one of our premier international clients in the iGaming and HTML5 gaming space to find a genuinely strong, engineering-minded Platform Engineer who wants to work on complex front-end systems, shared tooling, performance optimisation and scalable game architecture.

This is not your typical front-end role. This is not just building buttons, product pages or isolated UI features. And this is definitely not a “ticket factory” engineering environment.
Instead, this role sits at the intersection of HTML5 gaming, platform engineering, front-end architecture, developer tooling, shared systems, mobile performance optimisation and scalable engineering workflows. The team is looking for someone who enjoys solving bigger engineering problems across multiple projects, not just delivering features one game at a time.
If you’ve ever enjoyed improving engineering workflows, reducing technical debt, building reusable systems, optimising performance across browsers and devices, improving build pipelines, mentoring engineers, creating cleaner architecture, and making developers around you more productive… this could be an incredibly strong fit.
The opportunity
This role focuses on helping improve the shared engineering foundations across multiple mobile-first HTML5 gaming projects. You’ll work closely with a highly technical engineering team on:
- Reusable game systems
- Internal frameworks and shared libraries
- Front-end architecture
- Mobile browser optimisation
- Build and release tooling
- Developer workflows
- Performance engineering
- Technical quality and scalability
The environment is modern, highly collaborative and deeply engineering-focused. Importantly, the business is open-minded around background. Experience in iGaming, HTML5 games, web gaming or mobile gaming would absolutely be valuable, but they are also very open to strong engineers coming from SaaS platforms, fintech, developer tooling, design systems, front-end platform teams, SDK development, internal tooling environments and complex TypeScript applications. The key thing they care about is engineering capability and platform-oriented thinking.
What you’ll actually be doing
This role is about improving how engineering happens across multiple projects. Some of the key challenges include:
- Reducing duplicated implementation across games
- Improving reusable components and shared libraries
- Improving build, packaging and release workflows
- Improving performance across mobile browsers and devices
- Reducing technical debt
- Improving engineering standards and developer workflows
- Helping teams make better technical decisions
- Contributing to shared frameworks and architecture
- Improving maintainability and delivery efficiency

You’ll still be hands-on coding regularly. This is not a pure architect role sitting in meetings all day. The team wants someone who can think strategically, solve real technical problems, contribute hands-on, improve systems over time, and influence engineering direction through practical work.
The kind of engineer they’re looking for
The sweet spot is probably someone who has moved beyond purely feature-focused front-end development and started thinking more broadly about systems, tooling and engineering quality. Examples of experience they’d love to see:
- Designing reusable libraries or component systems
- Improving architecture across products or teams
- Building internal tooling or developer workflows
- Improving CI/CD or release processes
- Solving performance bottlenecks
- Improving mobile and browser compatibility
- Mentoring engineers
- Reducing repeated engineering effort
- Improving developer experience
- Contributing to engineering standards or platform direction
You do not necessarily need the title “Platform Engineer”. Some of the strongest candidates may currently be Senior Front-End Engineers, Senior JavaScript Engineers, Game Engineers, Front-End Leads, Web Platform Engineers, SDK Engineers or Tooling Engineers who naturally think beyond isolated feature delivery.
Technical environment
The stack currently includes:
- TypeScript and JavaScript
- Cocos Creator
- Node.js
- Rollup
- HTML5 gaming frameworks
- Private npm packages
- Plugin and package-based architecture
- Shared component libraries
- Mobile-first development
- Cross-device optimisation
- Build tooling and release workflows
You do not need experience with every technology listed. Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to understand architecture and tooling-level problems are far more important.
Why this role is different
One of the genuinely interesting parts of this opportunity is that the engineering problems are real. This team is trying to improve scalability, consistency, maintainability, delivery quality, developer efficiency and platform reuse across multiple game products.
There is substantial opportunity here for someone who enjoys creating order from complexity, improving systems over time, influencing engineering culture, helping teams work smarter, and solving technical challenges that actually matter.
The local engineering team is relatively small, collaborative and technically strong, while also working closely with broader international engineering and product teams. So you’ll have both strong local collaboration and broader global engineering exposure.
Growth and career progression
This role has real long-term upside for the right person. Depending on your level and impact, this could evolve into stronger platform ownership, technical lead responsibilities, architecture leadership, broader engineering influence or platform strategy ownership. The business is genuinely interested in engineers who want to grow over time.
Working environment
- Chatswood, Sydney location
- 5 days per week on-site
- Collaborative engineering culture
- Highly technical environment
- Fast-moving product and engineering team

This environment will suit someone who enjoys being around other engineers, solving problems together, whiteboarding ideas and collaborating face-to-face rather than sitting fully remote in isolation.
Salary
$120k – $160k + Super, depending on level, experience and fit. The team is open to strong mid-level engineers with platform potential and experienced senior platform-oriented engineers.
Ideal backgrounds
You may have experience in HTML5 gaming, iGaming, mobile gaming, front-end platform engineering, developer tooling, SaaS engineering, fintech engineering, complex TypeScript applications, design systems or reusable front-end architectures. Mandarin language skills are helpful but absolutely not essential.
